Livestock Fencing
Livestock Fencing is designed to restrict livestock’s movement on a farm. Choosing the type of fencing depends on the amount of livestock and whether the fencing will be permanent or temporary. There are four main types of fencing, suspension, barbed, smooth and page wire.
Suspension or high-tension wiring is designed to move willingly between the posts. When livestock touches or tries to reach through, the wire creates a whipping action, which frightens them and ensures they will not return. It is faster and less expensive to install in comparison to other fencing systems.
Barbed wire is designed with staples attached and will reduce the whipping action. There is a more risk for the animal and worker for injury because of the staples. This wire is mainly used for better controlling of the animals compared the smooth wire.
Smooth wire is a wire that normally have five or more wires, from those normaly two of the wires are electrified. This wire is an easier installation in comparison to barbed wire; not as effective with controlling larger animals.
Page wire is manufactured to be a permanent fencing type. They are made in different sizes and heights and is more visible for the animals to be separated. This is the most expensive out of the four fences because of installation and material costs.
There are fences that are made of different material is but is less secure, they can also be electrical or not. Before purchasing a fencing system, make sure you know what type of fencing you want and the dimensions to make the animals comfortably and securely fenced in.
